A Song in Life 27.04.2025

Dashed To Shivers finetune their robust indie-rock sonics in the sophomore album "Undertow."

Emotions run high in Dashed To Shivers' "Undertow": zippy drums and towering guitar riffs are nearly constant on this album. It's more than the usual punk rock we are used to hearing around, rather burgeoning into other interesting sub-genres for good measure to stand out truly. The uprising band transcends beyond usual stylistic thresholds, dipping fully into the indie-rock spirit with defining qualities like passion and creative thrust. Over forty-some minutes, the collection of tracks is laced with adrenaline-coursing arrangements, never compromising on the underlying sentiments that humanize them.

From the flatlands of the Münsterland, the quartet eventually grew from its founding two members, Dominik (guitars) and Steve (drums), to include Sebastian (vocals) and André (guitars) later after several changes in the line-up. Each member brings a cumulative experience; from encompassing film soundtracks to thrashing metal, the said contributors have worked on a wide spectrum of genres prior. Naturally, this doesn't escape their discography either— curious listeners will notice the blend of electronic music with punk/hard rock, thus adopting a distinctive indie/alternative signature.

Their previous releases have earned admiration from critics, with notable ones being the pensive number "Hollywood" (focusing on a nostalgic, despondent theme about broken dreams) and "Echo," which develops from a textural intro into full-blown, unfettered choruses.

"Undertow" doesn't waste any second to be forthright about its cynical inclinations— in fact, from the opening "Dry My Tears," the buzzing guitars and manic guitars interlace with vocal growls, nevertheless with melodic verses where the moments of wistfulness come up: it's purely cathartic, unabashedly sentimental if not full-blown emo. On the titular "Undertow" that follows soon after, rampaging riffs from guitars cause havoc paired with a strutting groove (all the while sounding ominous with its moody chord progression). Respite arrives in the form of "CCS": a display of the band's production ingenuity, the post-rock interlude incorporates scattered drums and delayed, atmospheric melodies.

A riveting act is unveiled during "Lazarus" with morbid lyricism (as the emphatic choruses make that abundantly clear), with an impactful hook leveraging the rugged, melodic guitars and cascading rhythms. In between, there are the calmer, more electronic sequences (even introducing a slick drum machine groove and synth riff at one point). More uncanniness follows in "Breathe" with a contorted piano intro, straightaway transitioning into raw-throated vocals and whipping ensemble (with abrupt changes into stripped-back bridges). Lastly, idiosyncratic finale "Why/Failed" holds more indie-pop ambitions as the trap-like groove melds into rock segments, retaining gloominess with the melancholic and heartbroken vocals.

HOLLYWOOD IS DASHED TO SHIVERS’ SINGLE OUT NOW

“Hollywood” by Dashed To Shivers opens like the start of a strange dream—the kind you can’t place in time, but you know you’ve had before.

Hollywood is Dashed To Shivers’ Single Out Now

Futuristic tones introduce you to this tune, hinting at a setting that’s not quite real.

Then comes a sequence of keyboard notes that ring out like a digital bell tower—precise, haunting, mechanical—and you’re suddenly pulled into something much deeper.

As the track unfolds, it straddles the line between memory and simulation. There’s a pull of nostalgia baked into the core, a longing for something glittering and golden, paired with an unmistakable sense of erosion.

The Hollywood of this song isn’t all red carpets and lights—it’s cracked sidewalks and fading dreams, presented with an emotional intensity that feels carefully shaped.

The production is tight. Layered synths clash and blend with distorted guitars that never feel chaotic, just urgent. There’s a consistent tension in the structure—as if everything is teetering at the edge. The drums are grounded and decisive, anchoring the piece while the rest of the instrumentation explores the edges of what feels like a dystopian cityscape.

Vocally, the delivery is restrained but deliberate. You get the sense that every phrase has weight, as if pulled out of a smoky memory. It’s less about vocal acrobatics and more about atmosphere—the kind that makes you question whether what you’re hearing is a memory or a projection of something that never quite was.

Dashed To Shivers have built a track that feels cinematic without overreaching. There’s an epic tone in the arrangements, especially in how the layers of synths and guitars play off each other. But there’s also a fragility there, something just barely holding together, like the last reel of film running through a vintage projector.

“Hollywood” feels like staring over a ledge—caught between dreaming and waking, between synthetic light and real shadow. It’s an experience you don’t shake easily.

Hollywood is Dashed To Shivers’ Single out Now!

Dashed To Shivers is a band from the Münsterland region of Germany that manages to create a unique symbiosis of 80s synths, indie rock and screamo. A mixture of haunting choruses and harmonious melodies, which are repeatedly interrupted by harder parts. The four musicians’ repertoire is just as varied as their different musical influences, which range from blues rock and atmospheric film music to post-hardcore, metal and punk rock. Dominik (guitar) and Steve (drums) founded the band in 2018. A little later, André (guitar) joined the band project and expanded the duo. The initial phase was characterised by the search for the right musical genre and other band members’ constant coming and going. However, as no one could be found for the long term, the decision was made to compensate for the absence with synth sounds, thus unknowingly opening the door to the group’s current unique sound.

Illustrate Magazine 18.04.2025

Undertow by Dashed To Shivers throws you into a mosh pit of synth-laced screamo and indie grit. It’s a genre cocktail you didn’t know you needed with 80s synths, snarling guitars, post-hardcore breakdowns, and melodic tenderness, all crashing together in gloriously unexpected ways. From the opening punch of “Dry My Tears”, with its grinding riffs and fierce growls, you’re bracing yourself. It stomps in and demands attention. Then comes the title track, “Undertow”, which feels like a cathartic scream into the void, complete with emotional vocals, shifting tempos, and in bridge, he pulls from the moodiness with vibrant, sharp music.

Midway through, “Soylent Green” slithers in with a smug, mysterious guitar riff that could soundtrack a midnight heist scene in a cyberpunk thriller. It oozes cool without trying too hard, and it’s impossible not to sway along. Just when you think the album’s all fire and fury, “Why/Failed” slows things down, dialing into something more introspective.

This being the first full-length with Sebastian on vocals, there’s a definite freshness to the delivery—his range dances between rage, melancholy, and melodic clarity without ever losing grip. The whole band sounds tight, dialed in, and completely unapologetic about their unpredictable soundscape. Honestly, Undertow feels like the result of locking four emotionally charged musicians in a studio with a synth machine, a bottle of angst, and zero rules. The result? A record that’s loud, layered, and thrillingly alive. It’s chaos. It’s catharsis. It’s Dashed To Shivers being exactly who they are—and it rocks.

Electric Pulse & Raw Emotion: Dashed To Shivers Hit Hard with ‘Undertow’

Dashed To Shivers released their second full-length album ‘Undertow’ which stands out as their strongest work to date. The band achieves sharper sound quality and improved cohesion due to Sebastian Kavermann’s vocal leadership. The album combines powerful emotional depth with rough energy utilizing 80s synth sounds and indie rock elements while incorporating screamo and darker punk influences to create an original raw experience. The album begins with “Dry My Tears” which immediately captures your attention. The guitars create a static-like disruption while the synths provide an unusual underlying beauty. Sebastian delivers a sound that carries weight yet rejects despair as if standing firm against collapse. “Every Second” shows their post-hardcore strength while maintaining melodic control. The drums hit with precision while guitars deliver tense vibrations and the vocals oscillate between roughness and lucidity. This track demands you scream along while dancing in a packed sweaty venue.

“Undertow”, the title track, stands out. The track exhibits a moody intensity while synth lines move smoothly over the guitars’ powerful sound waves. The track’s haunting sound evokes an underwater pull which matches its name well. “Shadow of the Sun” and “CCS” reduce the speed of their tracks. The previous track creates a cinematic experience whereas “CCS” creates a reflective atmosphere. The track demonstrates the band’s exceptional ability to manage contrasting musical elements. “Black Knight” returns to chaotic energy levels. The song delivers a powerful sound through distorted guitar riffs and rapid tempo which feels almost chaotic yet remains well-organized. The band combines all elements while the synths create tension in the track “Cobras in Fire”. It’s urgent and unrelenting. “Lazarus” surprises with its emotional weight. It’s slower, but that gives it power.

“Soylent Green” combines playful elements with an unusual groove that runs beneath its aggressive sound – an entertaining experience that maintains its rough edge. The first impression of “Breath” suggests fragility yet its sound expands over time. The song creates a lasting impression on listeners. “Forgotten Zone” and “No Future” deliver forceful rhythms that generate powerful soundscapes though they maintain authenticity with their heartfelt essence. The closing track “Why/Failed” presents a distinct kind of weightiness. The songwriting burrows deep and the instrumentation remains unrefined yet it compels listeners to reflect. The ending leaves things open-ended and continues to resonate. ‘Undertow’ stands out as a vibrant and dynamic musical work. Each track creates dynamic emotional movements through patterns of tension and release. Dashed To Shivers has done more than an experiment because they’ve successfully discovered their winning formula. The full experience of this album demands attentive listening from start to finish at high volume.

Electric Emotion and Raw Power: Dashed To Shivers Crash Through with ‘Undertow’

Dashed To Shivers’ ‘Undertow’ is a thrilling album that blends multiple genres into an electrifying experience. The band’s combination of 80s synths, indie rock, screamo, and harder rock elements create a unique sound that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish. The album opens with “Dry My Tears”, which immediately sets the tone with its emotional intensity and guitar-driven melody. The track blends raw emotion with haunting synths, drawing you in with its powerful hooks. Following this, “Every Second” builds on the atmospheric sound, combining atmospheric layers with sharp guitar riffs that make for an infectious yet emotionally charged track. “Undertow”, the title track, showcases the band’s signature ability to juxtapose haunting melodies with heavy moments, taking listeners on a sonic ride as the track swells and intensifies. This powerful blend of moods continues with “Shadow of the Sun” and “CCS”, which explore darker tones, with post-punk influences pushing through and sharpening the band’s already complex sound.

As the album progresses, tracks like “Black Knight” and “Cobras in Fire” take a more metal-leaning approach, bringing a high energy and aggressive intensity that contrasts with the earlier atmospheric tracks. These songs are a raw outburst, delivering high-energy guitar riffs and screamo vocals that hit hard. The transition into “Lazarus” shows the band’s ability to slow things down without losing their emotional depth, making it one of the most captivating tracks on the album. “Soylent Green” and “Breathe follow with their cinematic atmospheres, bringing elements of film-inspired sounds to the forefront. These tracks allow for reflection, adding a deeper layer to the album’s overall emotional range, and showcasing the band’s versatility in blending genres.

The closing tracks “No Future”, “Forgotten Zone”, and “Why/Failed” round out ‘Undertow’ with an intense finish, leaving listeners with a sense of urgency and unrelenting energy. These tracks are filled with angst and raw emotion, marked by strong guitar work and intense vocal delivery. The band brings the album full circle, leaving no room for complacency. ‘Undertow’ is a testament to Dashed To Shivers’ ability to push musical boundaries, fusing a variety of influences from metal, post-hardcore, and atmospheric rock to create something entirely unique. With this album, the band not only refines their sound but also pushes the envelope, making it clear that they are a force to be reckoned with in the rock scene.

Undertow is the second album release from Dashed To Shivers, an alternative synth rock band who we’re discovering for the first time.

By Graeme Smith

Founded in Münsterland, Germany in 2018 by guitarist Dominik and drummer Steve, the band’s line-up was completed by André on guitar and Sebastian on vocals. The addition of synth to their compositions was originally meant as a stopgap, but soon became part of their signature sound.

It’s a sound that proves instantly captivating in their new album Undertow. It’s at once typical hard rock and something distinctive indefinable. Dry My Tears starts the album off in a raucous way, trading big instrumental swells with lowkey verses before giving us the full effect in an anthemic chorus. It’s an early highlight.

Other highlights include hefty, pleading title track Undertow, the emo-infused Shadow of the Sun, the swaggering, driving Cobras in Fire, the moody, dystopian Soylent Green, and the rousing Breath. No Future will have you up and moving while Why/Failed closes the album in thoughtful, slow-building style.

Dashed To Shivers bring so many different kinds of rock together with their new album, but it never loses its coherency. Add that to their own unique compositional twists and turns, and you’ve got yourself something really exciting.

Undertow is out now and you can give it a listen below.

You Heard It Here – Dashed To Shivers’ Undertow Album

BY KRIS GOETZAPRIL 14, 20250

Hailing from Germany, Dashed To Shivers is a band that creates a unique sound by incorporating indie rock, screamo, and 80s synth styles. They’ve just released their new album, Undertow – their second full-length, and their first with singer Sebastian Kavermann. The album features 13 new tracks, balancing soulful sounds with heavier influences.

Dashed To Shivers first started in 2018 as a duo that soon became a trio. While looking for other members to round out the sound, the band decided to add synths to fill the gap, “unknowingly opening the door to the group’s unique sound today,” as the band says. By 2022, the band joined Monasteria Records, a punk rock indie label, and then found their new singer. With everything falling into place, Dashed To Shivers got started on new music, soon releasing four singles, and now their new album.

Undertow starts with “Dry My Tears,” a song with immediate energy, due to its heavy, fast drums and riffs. This has a stellar hardcore sound, featuring melodic vocals balanced by a few impactful screamo moments. From there, “Every Second” offes a slightly more upbeat side of the band’s sound, with a pop-punk/ska feel and a fast-paced chorus. “Undertow” brings back the heavier style with compelling riffs and a palpable metal influence. What would likely be classified as a personal favourite on the album, “Black Knight” boasts feverish alt-rock energy, a great ebb and flow of sounds and style, and some explosive moments of interest throughout. Another stand-out is “Cobras In Fire,” which may be the most accessible song of the 13 tracks–it’s highly infectious, and sounds like a rock radio hit. Another song with a hooky chorus, “No Future” also has “rock hit” written all over it. Those guitar riffs are undeniable. Undertow ends with “Why/Failed,” one of the album’s mellowest tracks. It has a positive feel to it, further underlined by the way the song grows in energy and loudness as it goes on, finishing with an impactful vocal.

Overall, Undertow is a compelling release with a nuanced sound. Dashed To Shivers has a knack for mixing heavier styles with melodic and catchy moments, making edgy and anthemic music that fans can still sing along to.

THE DUALITY IS THE POINT OF UNDERTOW

Album Review, International, New Music | By Ian Ureta

On February 21st, 2025, Dashed to Shivers, a band that sounds like they were formed when four Romantic poets were cursed to wander the Münsterland countryside until they learned power chords, released Undertow, their second full-length album. It also marks the debut of their new frontman, Sebastian Kavermann, whose voice is less “lead singer” and more “plague doctor delivering an impassioned TED Talk on heartbreak.”

The album clocks in at 13 tracks, a number which, in true goth fashion, is not ominous by accident. The record is a genre-blending, incense-drenched labyrinth of emotional volatility and theatrical darkness, delivered with the kind of sincerity that would make most indie bands spontaneously combust from irony withdrawal.

Now, normally, when a band cites influence from Ghost, you prepare for disappointment. You expect a copy of a copy of Meliora with less charisma and more eyeliner. But Dashed to Shivers doesn’t merely pay homage. No. They commit ritual. Undertow isn’t influenced by Ghost — it stages a dramatic intervention. It drags them into a velvet-curtained room, locks the door, and says: “What if we took your cathedral rock, removed the smirk, and replaced it with actual spiritual dread?”

And reader, somehow… it works.

Kavermann doesn’t so much sing as he materializes, whispering liturgical angst in Latin-adjacent syllables like he’s just been excommunicated and is thriving because of it. Tracks like “Dry My Tears” are so emotionally raw they border on uncomfortably earnest — the kind of song that makes you stare out the window on a train you’re not even on. And yet, you don’t cringe. You light a candle. You open your third eye. You say thank you.

Then, just as you’re emotionally cradled in ambient synths and Gregorian sadness, the album punches you in the ribs with a riff that sounds like it was excavated from the basement of a condemned abbey. The shift in tone is so jarring and yet so perfect that you start to wonder if the real genre of this album is mood swings.

The duality is the point. Undertow thrives in its tension between delicacy and distortion, ritual and rebellion, incense and fire. “Forgotten Zone” and “Cobras in Fire”, both of which have been given the music video treatment, showcase the band’s ability to slam between styles like a possessed jukebox. One minute you’re in a slow-burning post-rock soundscape, the next you’re in a pit with leather-jacketed punks fighting to the rhythm of a demonic samba.

Where most bands pick a lane, Dashed to Shivers gleefully crashes through all of them in a hearse. And it’s a nice hearse. Velvet seats. Bone-shaped gear shift. Plays only Bauhaus and the Bloodborne soundtrack.

Let’s not ignore how absurd this all should be. A German alt-rock band earnestly invoking occult imagery, baroque melodies, and punk-adjacent breakdowns, fronted by a man who sings like he’s personally disappointed in God? It should collapse under its own melodrama. But instead, it ascends.

This isn’t a gimmick. It’s a concept executed with the deadly seriousness of a cult leader writing their first love song. And the result is cinematic, not in the Marvel sense, but in the “grainy Eastern European folk horror film that ends with a funeral dirge and an unsolved murder” kind of way. It’s the sound of a band not just unafraid to be dramatic, but furious that you’re not being dramatic enough.

In conclusion: Undertow is brooding, theatrical, and deeply, almost suspiciously effective. It’s music for people who read Edgar Allan Poe for the vibes and take notes. It’s the kind of album that convinces you to start dressing exclusively in shades of ash and wine. It makes you rethink your relationship with the word “dirge.”

And if nothing else, it proves one thing beyond all doubt: Dashed to Shivers is not your cousin’s basement band. They’re here, they’re unreasonably sad, and they’ve brought a choir, a candelabrum, and a surprisingly well-articulated worldview.

Berlin On Air 08.04.2025

"Dashed to Shivers eröffnet Monasteria Recordz Labelfest 1/2023 mit mitreißender Performance

Man sollte definitiv darauf achten, was da noch so in Zukunft kommt.
